日常の会話で、文化的な、高尚な話をするのはタブーであり、話題として許されるのは、藝能界の話やエロ話、教師の悪口といった、極力下賎なものに限定されていた。
教科書に高橋和巳の文章が載っていたことがあった。生徒らは、その頃高橋カツミとかいう野球選手がいたらしく、カツミなら知ってるけど、和巳なんか知らない、と口々に言った。知っていて知らないふりをしている者もいたかもしれないが、彼らにとって重要なのは、文学者の名前など知らないということであって、それが彼らにとっては名誉なのである。

先行世代に支持された作家など、知っていてはまずい、そんなものを知っているのは、のちの言葉で言うキモい奴ということになってしまう。
